Why Smoked Buffalo Chicken Dip Works
Smoky Flavor Elevates the Dip: Smoking the chicken (or even the entire dip) adds a rich, wood-fired flavor that complements the spicy tang of buffalo sauce. This extra layer of flavor makes the dip more exciting compared to a standard buffalo dip, adding a rustic, BBQ element.
Balance of Textures: The creamy base made from cheeses like cream cheese, cheddar, and sometimes blue cheese or ranch dressing contrasts nicely with the tender, shredded chicken. The smoked chicken adds a slight crispness or char, which enhances the texture even more.
Heat and Smoke Complement Each Other: The heat from the buffalo sauce is balanced by the smokiness, creating a depth of flavor that doesn’t rely purely on spiciness. The smoked element mellows the heat while still keeping the bold buffalo kick.
Versatile for Various Occasions: Whether it’s for game days, backyard BBQs, or casual get-togethers, smoked buffalo chicken dip is easy to make in bulk and appeals to a wide audience. The smokiness makes it stand out, but it’s still comforting and familiar.
Ingredients
- 2 cups of pulled or diced chicken. I bought a cooked rotisserie chicken for this recipe
- ¼ cup of buffalo sauce
- ¼ cup of blue cheese dressing. You can substitute this with ranch dressing as well.
- ¼ cup of crumbled gorgonzola cheese
- 8 ounces of room temp cream cheese
- ¼ cup of sliced green onions
- 1 ¼ cup of mexican blend shredded cheese
- 1 ½ tablespoons of Italian herb seasoning
- Pretzels, chips or veggies for dipping
Instructions
Prepare the dip mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced chicken, buffalo sauce, blue cheese dressing, cream cheese, ¼ cup of shredded cheese, and Italian herb seasoning. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are well-blended
Transfer to an oven-safe dish: Once the mixture is fully combined, transfer it to an oven-safe dish, spreading it evenly to ensure even cooking.
Preheat the smoker or oven: Set your smoker or oven to 225°F (107°C). This low and slow cooking process will give your dip that signature smoky flavor.
Smoke the dip: Place the dish in the smoker or oven and let it cook for 2 hours. To ensure the flavors meld together perfectly, stir the dip every 30 minutes throughout the cook.
Add extra cheese: After 2 hours, sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese on top of the dip.
Broil for a golden finish: Set your oven to broil and place the dip under the broiler until the cheese is golden and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
Garnish and serve: Remove the dip from the oven and garnish with crumbled gorgonzola and freshly chopped green onions. Serve it hot with chips, pretzels, or your favorite veggies, and get ready to enjoy the ultimate dip!
