This is a great appetizer and dip for several reasons

Enhanced Flavor:

  • Adds a deep, smoky flavor that compliments the sweetness of the caramelized onions. This complexity enhances the overall taste, making the dip more interesting and satisfying.
  • The natural sweetness and umami from the onions are intensified when smoked, providing a rich, savory base for the dip.

Healthier Option:

  • When made with high-quality ingredients, this dip can be a healthier option compared to many processed dips. Using fresh onions, and possibly substituting part of the cream base with Greek yogurt, can enhance the nutritional profile.

Ingredients

  • 2 onions cut in half
  • 8 ounces of cream cheese
  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • Salt, Pepper, & Garlic Seasoning to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • Olive or avocado oil

Instructions for Smoked French Onion Dip

Begin by peeling onions and cutting them in half, preparing them for the smoking process.

Line a cooking tray with foil and generously coat it with olive oil to prevent sticking.

Place the onion halves, sliced side down, onto the oiled tray, ensuring they are evenly spaced.

Oiled Onions getting ready for some smoke

Coat the remaining onion pieces with olive oil before placing them alongside the halves on the tray.

Preheat your smoker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit(121°C) and carefully place the tray inside. Let the onions smoke for 2-3 hours until they are cooked through and tender. (You can make this in the oven as well)

Once the onions are fully cooked, remove them from the smoker and allow them to cool on a cutting board for 15-20 minutes.

Discard any papery outer layers that may have formed during the cooking process, then dice up the onions to your desired size. (I personally prefer chopping them into small pieces, but feel free to adjust according to your preference.)

In a bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, and apple cider vinegar, mixing thoroughly to create a creamy base.

Add the diced smoked onions to the bowl, then season with salt, pepper, garlic, and smoked paprika, ensuring each bite is bursting with flavor.

Mix all the ingredients thoroughly, then refrigerate the dip for 1-2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together.

When ready to serve, plate up your Smoked French Onion Dip alongside some crispy chips and prepare to delight your taste buds with each savory bite.
